"It's what I'm doing that tells me what I am looking for."
Pierre Soulages

It is in exploring shapes and colors that I find the tone and composition of these abstract paintings evolving. My studies, usually in ink on rice paper and often decorated with touches of paint that I use to determine the color range of the final painting, are executed quickly, even impulsively, and are inspired by oriental calligraphy, a legacy of my studies of Japanese language and culture and my many trips to Asia. The production of the resulting paintings is the exact opposite of the rapid development of this preliminary work. My paintings often take several months to finish, since using a knife to apply thick layers of oil paint requires a lot of drying time between sessions.
